KS3

Teaching is in mixed ability groups with regular assessment and review. In Year 7 students are taught, in the main, by one teacher for Humanities, which incorporates History and Geography.

Year 7     Roman Empire and Medieval Realms

Year 8     Tudors and Stuarts and Native Peoples of North America

Year 9     Britain 1750 - 1900 and the 20th Century

A mixture of learning activities are used, including teacher-led discussions and work, ICT-based activities, drama and role-play, student presentations and practical projects.

Homework complements lesson content and develops understanding, interest and research skills. As well as having a good range of textbooks, three classrooms have interactive whiteboards toencourage participation.

History, a summary

Key Elements

KS4

History is an optional subject, but it is always very well supported by students who have enjoyed the subject at KS3.

We follow the GCSE course: OCR Schools History Project. The two main areas of study are Medicine and Health Through Time and Germany 1919 - 1945. Students also complete two pieces of coursework: Saltaire and Vietnam, which is 25% of the final mark.

The department offers revision classes, coursework clinics, in-house revision guides and individual support where appropriate.

Medicine and health through time

KS5

We often need to run two parallel groups to accommodate demand at post-16 level.

We study the Edexcel course, comprising three units at both AS and A2 level. In Year 12 students study The Poor Law, French Revolution and Napoleon. Year 13 cover The Reign of Elizabeth, Chartism and also complete a piece of coursework on The Role of Women in the 20th Century.
