Music

Salt MusicWelcome to Salt Grammar Music Department. At Salt Grammar School we are proud of our strong music tradition in both classical and popular music. We hope that this page will help to provide some information about us and support the link between home and school. On these pages you will find curriculum information, extra curricular news and events.

Salt Music department is included within the Creative/Cultural Faculty, which also includes dance, drama, media studies, art, and PE. We are a strong team of 2 full time members of staff with a wide range of experience teaching KS3 (11-14), KS4 (GCSE) and KS5 (A-Level). A number of teachers from a variety of sources come into school to teach the whole range of orchestral instruments including electric guitar and keyboard. Many of the teachers play a vital role in preparing pupils’ GCSE and A-Level performances.

students in the computer music roomThe department is well equipped with a rich variety of instruments (including MIDI keyboards, guitars, orchestral instruments and world instruments e.g. African Drums and Indian harmoniums). We have very good accommodation consisting of two main teaching rooms, an A level teaching room, an ensemble rehearsal room, a computer suite, and two practice rooms. Our computer suite runs up to date music software (Sibelius 4, Cubase SE3 and Dance E-jay) on 15 workstations.

KS3 Music is taught in mixed ability classes. The curriculum is based around four main learning activities: performing, listening, appraising and composing. It is a broad based curriculum that follows National Guidelines and includes the study of a wide range of music styles. In this practical subject students will learn about the rich variety of music from film and pop to classical and World through listening, playing and composing. At KS4 students study the AQA GCSE Music syllabus and at KS5 students can choose from either AQA GCE Music or Edxcel GCE Music Technology.
