Pastoral Learning Unit at Salt
(PLUS)

The PLUS (Pastoral Learning Unit) at Salt Grammar has been established to provide the school with an additional learning milieu. PLUS provides students with a proactive environment, supporting those students who are:
  • Grade C/D border line
  • Struggling academically with Special Educational Needs (SEN)
  • Weaker learners who are not on the SEN register
  • Find the classroom environment difficult for various reasons

In PLUS, students are able to work at a more individualised pace on curriculum work, with one to one assistance. Where possible, it is the intention of PLUS to address the individual learning of each student and return all completed work to the subject teacher for assessment.

Since the onset of a full-time Manager, PLUS has looked at opportunities to support the school community by:

  • Addressing issues concerning Every Child Matters
  • Personalised learning ‘Tailoring learning to the needs, interests and aspirations of each individual’
  • Implementing an induction programme for referred students to PLUS
  • Establishing a review process of students’ time in PLUS
  • Developing documentation to record work and behaviour of students whilst in PLUS
  • Implementing a reward scheme based on the merit system
  • Using complementary therapy skills to build citizenship
  • For students to ‘make a positive contribution’
  • Increasing learning resources through an enrichment programme
  • Leading a weekly staff meeting to enhance joint working and continuity of approach

PLUS has been re-designed to give the individual a more holistic environment with emphasis on a proactive rather than a reactive approach to learning and personal development. Through this approach, individual students needs can be identified, planned for, and appropriate strategies implemented.

Ultimately, the working environment within PLUS, with the PLUS staff, in conjunction with the teaching staff, aim to progress each individual student to achieve their full potential to reach the grades they deserve.
